The basic building design of the Quonset hut is used today for many purposes. The design has curved walls that forms an arch over the floor. Because of the arch design, it was difficult to place furniture or machinery along the walls of the Quonset hut. To solve this problem, the walls were altered to have a 90 degree angle. Quonset hut buildings inspired the design of modern day prefabricated steel buildings.
